The Bishop of Edinburgh presided at a service for the Re-Affirmation of Wedding Vows on Saturday, 12 July, at St John’s, Princes Street. The twenty couples involved achieved an aggregate score of 752 years of married life.
The service was the idea of the Rector of St John’s, Rev John Armes and his wife, Clare, who have just celebrated their Silver Wedding. “We decided to invite back all the couples who’ve been married at St John’s during my ten years as Rector,” said John. “Others decided to join us. So the longest-married couple clocked up 60 years and the shortest-married, eight months. It was great fun; a chance to meet up with old friends over lunch after the service and a real celebration of the blessings and the challenges of human relationships.”
Most couples were from Scotland but they were joined by visitors from the United States as well as the Bishop of Cape Coast in Ghana, Daniel Allotey, and his wife Eugenia, en route to Lambeth. In his sermon Bishop Brian reflected on the story of the Wedding at Cana in Galilee (John 2).
